Manufactured Landscapes follows artist Edward Burtynsky as he travels through China with his large-format field camera. He photographs landscapes shaped by large-scale human activity and the country’s breathtaking industrial revolution, capturing remarkable locations such as the Three Gorges Dam, massive factories, and Shanghai’s urban environment. Extending the narratives of Burtynsky’s photographs, Manufactured Landscapes, shot on Super 16mm film, creates a richly layered portrait of a changing planet. The film offers a meditative perspective on the Anthropocene and the complex entanglements with the way we live.

This special screening will be followed by a post-screening talk in English with artist Edward Burtynsky and Ikko Yokoyama, Lead Curator of Design and Architecture at M+.

In conjunction with the BURTYNSKY: Extraction/Abstraction exhibition at Saatchi Gallery, the British Film Institute (BFI) will be presenting The Anthropocene Trilogy, featuring the powerful films of Edward Burtynsky, Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier — ANTHROPOCENE: The Human Epoch (2018), Watermark (2013) and Manufactured Landscapes (2006). The presentation will include a special IMAX screening of ANTHROPOCENE: The Human Epoch at BFI IMAX, the largest cinema screen in Europe, to kick off the 2024l BFI Future Film Festival.

Where would we be – or would we even be – without water? Join ROM’s Soren Brothers and internationally acclaimed photographer Ed Burtynsky for a special screening of Burtynsky’s visually dazzling documentary Watermark. The film brings together diverse stories from around the globe about our relationship with water: how we are drawn to it, what we learn from it, how we use it and the consequences of that use. Following the screening, Brothers and Burtynsky will explore humanity’s relationship with water in the context of climate change and what we all too often take for granted – until it’s gone.
